Interactive Design Group (IDG) is a multidisciplinary architecture firm based in Roanoke, Virginia. Founded in 1997 by Air Force veteran, Bill Hume, IDG approaches each project with military precision: listening, strategizing, and executing, while faithfully meeting every deadline.

[Fun fact: Bill was recently honored as the Virginia Small Business Veteran of the year!]

IDG is a true generalist firm, working across industry sectors to serve clients in Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. They recently opened a second office in Richmond, VA, which further expands their geographic reach.

When CVG first met Bill and his wife, IDG’s CFO, Jill Hume, we were drawn to their warm and open personalities. We were curious how the “military precision” highlighted in their mission statement would translate to a typical small design firm culture... and as we got to know the firm better, we observed a firm dedicated to efficiency and client satisfaction. This is a firm that knows its unique value!

We’re excited to partner with IDG to help guide their future, and they’re ready to grow:

“We were impressed from our initial call… and the ability for CVG's team to drill down so deep and quickly into our business and to understand our internal team and project diversity. This provided a comfort which we feel is a value as we continue to grow and plan for transition in the future. Strategizing with CVG on a business level provides the ability for us to set a realistic business trajectory.” — IDG CEO, Bill Hume

Through a facilities assessment it was determined that Patrick Henry High School would be replaced. The new design consolidated the school into a single building with public functions located on the ground floor and academics on the second and third floor. The lower level includes gymnasiums, art facilities, a media center, and cafeteria. The academic spaces were designed utilizing a "school within a school" concept creating learning communities. Each learning community contains 12 classrooms, three science labs, a general lab, two career tech labs, faculty offices, workroom and administrative space.

The design of this new athletic and fitness facility in downtown Roanoke included two indoor pools – one for swimming laps and one for water aerobics and physical therapy. The pools were built within the former Jefferson High School gym, which reduced the cost of the project by nearly $1 million. A large Fitness Center, two basketball courts, an elevated walking / running track, two group exercise studios, a cycling studio, four racquetball courts and a multi-purpose room provide a full array of fitness and recreation opportunities. Additionally, a 9,000 sf expansion that doubled the size of the Fitness Center and added a Teen Center opened in February 2011.

Delta Dental required a full interior and exterior renovation to their office building for housing over 300 employees. This project transformed their offices into an open and collaborative environment giving the company a clean, contemporary, corporate image. Interior renovations focused on bringing natural light into the building’s core, which included a two-story atrium with a large skylight, open break areas, a cafe, large exercise room, and multiple casual conference spaces. Exterior renovations included a complete replacement of the window glazing as well as re-cladding the main entrance spaces. New sidewalks, landscaping, and outside lighting enhance the building’s contemporary new look.

Freedom First Credit Union, Campbell Avenue Branch | Roanoke, VA

FFCU - Campbell Ave Branch.jpg

With the opportunity to modernize their Downtown Branch, Freedom First decided to go for it. IDG designed a space with loft-like aesthetics which gave it a modern edge, while still holding onto Roanoke's industrial history. The design space included private offices, conference rooms, and a teller line with many support spaces. Wanting to capitalize on the fifteen-foot ceilings, the offices were arranged in a pod configuration allowing for the addition of an exposed steel mezzanine to house a conference room. The finishes, fixtures, and accents were selected to enhance the industrial design aesthetic - these include local reclaimed barn wood wall planks, lighting fixtures, a perforated corrugated metal panel ceiling, and decorative accents fabricated by local artisans.

When Member One Federal Credit Union was looking to build an additional facility on their property, IDG presented the company with a full campus concept. This concept gave a way to better utilize the space they had, link to their existing facility, and prepare for future growth. The design also included a new Corporate Headquarters, a three-story facility, situated to capitalize on the property's prominent road frontage. The design included training rooms, a corporate gym with lockers, executive offices, and multiple conference rooms.
