12 May Love | Schack Architecture Named Finalists in Architecture Business Plan Competition

Love | Schack Architecture entered competition to challenge themselves

BOZEMAN and JACKSON – May 5, 2016: Designer Lindsey Love of Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Architect Lindsay Schack of Bozeman, Montana share a passion for sustainability, communities, and connecting with nature. Together, founded on a commitment to incorporating nature and enhancing communities through design, they created Love | Schack Architecture.
Schack explained, “Love | Schack Architecture is really about bringing healthy, sustainable solutions to the projects that we’re asked to be a part of … Our goal is to enable our clients to capitalize on opportunities and create the most value in their project.”

Love and Schack became friends while attending Montana State University in Bozeman, later graduated and went in separate directions. About ten years later, they began consulting with each other while working independently, which grew into a more formal relationship and eventually a business partnership.

Late in 2015, Love | Schack Architecture chose to participate in the Charrette Venture Group’s Architecture Business Plan Competition to challenge themselves as a firm and develop a plan that worked well for their unique business structure.

According to Love, “It seemed like a really great way to spur us into answering some questions that we really needed to answer. As we were beginning to work together things were rolling along pretty well, we were busy, but we knew that we’re both very ambitious and we didn’t want to get caught up in the day to day business operations without a long-term goal. We also were realizing that there were some things missing that we would probably be more successful if we could answer the questions and help focus our goals and efforts toward the answers.”

Schack continued, “Entering the Architecture Business Plan Competition really came out of us realizing that we’re not like many other firms out there, and we needed to come up with creative solutions to the issues that we have. Many of those issues related to being a remote firm, looking to technology to support what we wanted to do and being leaders and push sustainability in our region…We actually had a lot of fun creating our entry and it has benefited us in that we had to distill down and filter what we believe we’re all about in order to even submit an entry to the competition.”

According to Matt Ostanik, Founder of Charrette Venture Group and organizer of the Architecture Business Plan Competition: “In the technology world, there is an overwhelming supply of resources to help new and growing companies. There are constant business plan competitions, pitch sessions, incubator programs, mentor circles, research, etc. etc. However, in the design space there is very little to aid for these entrepreneurs. The ultimate goal of Charrette Venture Group is to serve as an investment firm that helps growing design firms.”

Preparing for the competition has helped Love | Schack Architecture define itself as a firm. “[We] had to define it for ourselves before we could define it for anyone else, and that was critical for us. We had a lot of great conversations and we made choices. We made choices that we needed to make in order to move forward,” Schack asserted.

Love echoed how much impact this competition has made on their future success, “As we move forward with our business development, marketing, hiring, we actually kind of know where we’re going. If we hadn’t been forced or taken this opportunity to initiate that motion, I don’t know if we would have. We would have just kept chugging along.”

The process also came with its challenges. Schack explained, “I think for us in this position, our greatest struggles are figuring out how we can be effective on our projects and effective for our clients while still valuing a balanced and healthy life, and one that allows us to enjoy the things that are outside our doors. That’s why everyone lives where we live, is that those things are important to us.”

Love | Schack Architecture clearly demonstrates that passion and commitment to nature with the use of sustainable materials and healthy projects.
